“Teaching Arabic in the Algerian Educational System:
National Sovereignty and Technology”
On December 18, 2024, the National Institute for Educational Research organized a roundtable to celebrate World Arabic Language Day under the theme: “Teaching Arabic in the Algerian Educational System: National Sovereignty and Technology“. The event, held from 10:00 to 11:30 AM, brought together a panel of experts and researchers specializing in education and Arabic language studies.
The session opened with remarks by Dr. Riad Zerrougui, Assistant Director of the Institute, who emphasized the importance of strengthening Arabic’s role in Algeria’s educational system while leveraging technological tools to modernize its teaching methods.
The discussion was chaired by Dr. Hamza Zergui, Director of the Department of Teaching, Pedagogical Sciences, and Innovation, who highlighted the need to balance the preservation of linguistic identity with the adoption of technological innovations.
First Presentation: “The Drawbacks of Using Generative AI Tools in Learning Arabic”, by Dr. Abd el hak Gasmi.
This intervention analyzed the negative impacts of over-reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) in learning Arabic. Key challenges include reduced human interaction essential for natural language acquisition, the homogenization of dialects in favor of Modern Standard Arabic, and an oversimplification of linguistic nuances at the expense of socio-cultural contexts. Dr. Gaasmi advocated for a complementary approach, where AI tools are designed to account for the complexity of Arabic language and culture.
Second Presentation: “Harnessing Technology in Arabic Language Education: Opportunities and Challenges”, by Dr. Kelthoum Derkaoui.
This presentation explored the benefits of technological tools, such as educational platforms and interactive applications, in enhancing Arabic language skills. However, Dr. Derkaoui also highlighted obstacles, including the scarcity of Arabic digital content, insufficient technological infrastructure in schools, and the need to train educators in effectively using these tools.
The roundtable featured engaging discussions, where panelists and attendees exchanged ideas and perspectives on the future of Arabic teaching in Algeria. The debates underscored the urgency of balancing technological innovation with the preservation of cultural and linguistic identity.
The event concluded with recommendations to invest in research for the development of Arabic digital tools and to enhance teacher training for effective integration of technology while preserving Algeria’s linguistic and cultural sovereignty..
